Q. Who or what is God
A. The One who created everything, Lord of all, the only God, who by His own earthly (human) death, redeemed his creation. The writer of the Bible, and who the Bible speaks of. He is the first and the last, has always been and will always be. He is the "I Am".

This is going to be a feeble attempt to answer this question. For a man to answer such a question we have to use terms that men can relate to. Lets face it, there aren't any man made words, or terms, that can even come close to explaining God. It is like a ameba looking up though the muddy water, trying to explain all a human is to other amebas. But I'll try my best.

First God is a "who", and not a what. God is a Trinity, which is a term that is best descried by it's self. God is eternal, He has always been, and always will be. God is omnipotence (all powerful) , omniscience (all knowing), and omnipresence (everywhere). God knows the end from the beginning, and is the only one who can, and does. God is Holy and perfect in Himself, and all that He does. God can't stand sin and demands a payment for all sin, yet is the embodiment of Grace, Love, and Mercy. God is sinless and because He can't deny His own nature, God can't sin. God can't temp others to sin, or be temped to sin. With God there is right and wrong, black and white, good and evil. There are no "gray" areas with God.

Does God have a name? Yes he has a number of them (yet none are allah, buddha, or other gods we humans have invented), please check out "what's in a name".

The apostles asked Jesus to show them the Father, His answer was that if they see the Son, they have seen the Father. If you think that means God is a thirty something longhaired Jew with a beard, your missing the point. Jesus is God, if you need further detail please feel free to look at "Who is Jesus ?". How he looked had nothing to do with who he was. Mankind has a tendency to confuse appearance with character. Brunettes are smart, redheads have a temper, and blondes are airheads. Heavy people are jolly, short people have a attitude, longhairs are druggies, and I'm not even going to start on the incredible ignorance mankind can display, when it comes down to color and race. No, to get a idea who God is, we have to "look" beyond the physical and mental image we have of Jesus, and "see" the information God has shown to us.

God is personal and knowable. God is a living being and the source of all life. At first he came to the garden of Eden for He wished to be with His creation. In a short time Adam and Eve hid ,for they had sinned. Over time He came in visions, dreams, a burning bush, and a host of other forms. Most times men hid, fell, cried, ran, or fainted. But God kept trying to have a close relationship with man.

Then He humbled himself to the point as to be born a human. He came to live with His creation, and His creation nailed Him to a cross. Even then He asked for the Father to forgive them. With forethought and planning, it was God's way to save the human race. He rebuked demons, temple leaders, and hypocrites. He controls the seas and nature. He walked on water and raised the dead. He turned water to wine and feed thousands. He loved children and cared for the poor. He came to save the sinner and showed no favor to gender, race, or creed. He taught to remember the widows, He cared for the sick, healed the blind, deaf, and lame. He sought out the unwanted, and outcast. He spoke to, and with, women, at a time, and in a culture, that relegated them to second class. He had no respect of class, the rich and mighty where no better then the fisherman, or the taxman. He was born in a stable and died a criminals death. Unjustly condemned He held no malice, and one of His last acts in human form was to save a justly condemned criminal.

Action speaks louder then words, and from Jesus' actions we can see some of Gods persona. God has emotion. He cares, loves, and feels sorrow (the shortest verse in the NT is "He wept", just a little side note). He feels hate, jalousie (not envy which is a sin, there is a big difference), and disgust. A force or "power" doesn't have emotion, only a living being can understand and feel at these levels. He is forgiving, patience, and understanding. He wishes to interact with man, to protect, heal, and guide. He by force cleared the Fathers house. By his words he knocked over a 100 armed soldiers, right off their feet, and then was lead like a lamb to His sacrifice. He even healed one of those men who was injured in the arrest.

In short God is alive and well, right here on the planet earth (and everywhere else). He knows you, and desires for you to know him. He is a personal God but remember He is also Holy. You can call to Him in the name of His Son Jesus, but do so in respect. Today there seems to be a air of disrespect. Be careful of terms like "the Man upstairs", "big buddy", "the head coach", and any reference that tries to bring Him down to our level. Not only does God demand respect, He more then deserves it.

God is so much more then most people (and I) can understand. God is self-existent. He has always been and always will. No matter what in this universe may happen, nothing can happen to God. He never was created and can never died. God is, and has always been, Eternal. God is self-sufficient, He needs nothing. He himself is all He needs, nothing outside Himself is required. He owes no one anything, nor requires anything from anyone, so He has no need to share His glory. And He is a jealous God, so to give glory to any other god is forbidden. You may be surprised what a god (small "g") is. Check Religion, What's yours?

The fact that God doesn't need us, the earth, or the universe, makes it all the more incredible, that He takes the effort, and time, to deal with us. With all that He is, He still is personable. God deals with us, and the world we live in, personally. He is a hands on, roll up your sleeves God. Other gods of other faiths are aloof, distance, and cold or cruel. Our God is knowable by his Son Jesus, once we know Jesus, and accept His gift of salvation. Our God is the embodiment of Grace, Mercy, Truth, and love. But He is also Holy and sinless, nor can He allow sin without a payment, that payment is death. But knowing that we couldn't pay this on our own, supplied that payment for us, in Jesus.

God gave us all we need to know of Him, and His gift of salvation, in the Bible. If you have never looked into one before, give it a try. Take a moment to read the Gospels. John, Matthew, Mark, or Luke. It will take less time then most short stories and far more rewarding. Go ahead, you know you want to. You don't have to tell anyone, only you and God will know, and that's all that matters. Afterwards you can tell others if you feel like it, and if you get saved I bet a time will come, that you will.

Proverb:30:4: Who hath ascended up into heaven, or descended? who hath gathered the wind in His fists? who hath bound the waters in a garment? who hath established all the ends of the earth? what is His name, and what is His Son's name, if thou canst tell?

Proverb:30:5: Every Word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him.

Proverb:30:6: Add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar.

Re:22:19: And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.
Re:22:20: He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus.
